Global Learning Courses

Introduction to Microbiology: MCB 2000

In this course, I learned about microbiology and how various microorganism related illness impact the human population globally. This was an interdisciplinary course in that we saw many presentations from different subject areas such as humanities and we were also exposed to in-class lectures on global health disparities. We also had the opportunity to study how illness and diseases impacts social and economic factors.

Introduction to Sociology: SYG 2000

In this course, I studied human interactions and how various sociological perspectives aim to understand contemporary societal issues. This course went into depth on how societal interactions are critical in understanding global perspective and individual actions. We studied various topics such as disparities in health, education, religion, media, violence, and race on a global scale and related to individual societies.

Honors Seminar V: IDH 3034 Narratives of Medicine, Health, and Healing: The Adult and Pediatric Experience

In the first half of this course we had an emphasis on the theme of adult medicine in the various texts that we read. This course focus on the patient experience and/or "illness story" which is unique to each individual and crucial for physicians to properly asses and treat each patient. By analyzing written works and visual media, we sought to understand the underlying themes related to health on both an individual and global perspective. The course discussed health related issues such as the ill acceptance of mental health in society and how this affects communities across the world. I also had the opportunity to choose a piece and create publish a wikipedia page on the topic. In this course, I chose the novel "Tuesdays with Morrie" to write about and publish on wikipedia

Honors Seminar VI: IDH 3035 Narratives of Medicine, Health, and Healing: The Adult and Pediatric Experience

In this course, we continued on the themes of health in narrative works, however, this time we had more of a focus on child health. The pieces we analyzed in this course pertained to various topics such as mental health and autoimmune disorders. The two wikipedia pages I worked on for this course were the documentary "The Genius of Marian" about a woman with Alzheimer's and the novel "Every Patient Tells a Story". This course was similar to the last in that we discussed global health disparities and the presentation of this in various narrative forms.
